MPs Dispute Justice Minister's Claims of Pending Legislation on Crime

MPs from various parties, Andreas Pasourtidis (AKEL) and Panikos Leonides (DIKO), refuted Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris's claims regarding pending legislation in the Parliament to address crime. Mr. Fytiris had called on the Parliament to provide the “weapons” needed by the Police to combat crime, following a serious incident in Larnaca. The MPs emphasized that there is no pending matter in the Parliament concerning legislative regulation of crime. Mr. Pasourtidis stated that the incident in Larnaca surprised him in terms of the time and place, but not in terms of the audacity of organized crime. Mr. Leonides noted that the Parliament cannot be aware of bills that have not been submitted to it. Mr. Pasourtidis called on the Justice Minister to clarify what exactly he expects from the Parliament, while Mr. Leonides hinted that the minister may not have been fully informed. They also referred to the surveillance law, which has already been passed and only the implementing regulations are pending. The MPs' statement highlights the need for better coordination and communication between the Parliament and the Government on issues related to security and crime prevention.
