MPs Discuss Body Cameras for Police - "Tool to Combat Crime"

The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs urgently discussed the placement of body cameras on police uniforms and vehicles, as an additional tool for performing their duties. The Deputy President of the Committee, Fotini Tsiridou, stated that Parliament is determined to provide the Police with any tools it needs to combat crime. The legislation provides a clear and strict framework for the use of cameras, aiming for transparency, control of behaviour, collection of evidence and evaluation of police operations. Constitutional obstacles have been overcome and the Committee will proceed to vote on the bill in plenary. MP for DIKO, Panikos Leonidis, expressed his support for the bill, but stressed the need to ensure individual freedoms and the constitutionality of the law. DIKO will seek ways to make the bill compatible with the Constitution and the EU Charter. The discussion is expected to be repeated in the Committee with priority, with the aim of passing the bill within the next month.
