Moment of Silence Held in Parliament for Former President George Vassiliou

A minute of silence was observed in the plenary session of the House of Representatives in memory of former President George Vassiliou. The President of the House, Zacharias Koulias, stated that the deceased served the political life of the country with consistency and a sense of responsibility, leaving a timeless mark on the history of Cyprus. Mr. Koulias emphasized that George Vassiliou's presidency was characterized by efforts to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, economic development, modernization of the state, and contribution to cultural events. He also highlighted the development of free radio and television and the initiative to establish the University of Cyprus. Special reference was made to the strategic promotion of Cyprus's accession to the European Union, which Mr. Koulias described as the greatest achievement of George Vassiliou's political career and a factor that shaped the future of the country. The President of the House concluded his eulogy by emphasizing the foresight, determination, and courage of the deceased, as well as the integrity with which he served public office. He expressed his regret for the irreplaceable void left by his death, but also the value of his political and moral legacy for future generations.
