MoD: No Immediate Threat to the Republic of Cyprus

The Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, stated that there is no immediate threat to the Republic of Cyprus, despite the increased tension in the wider region. However, he clarified that concerns primarily relate to the British Bases located on the island. He emphasized that the British Bases are within the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus. The Minister of Defence assured that the National Guard is at a high level of readiness and that Cyprus has the means to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, if necessary. He expressed his gratitude to Greece and France for their prompt response and the dispatch of military forces, describing it as an act of solidarity between friendly and allied countries. He also mentioned the intention of other European countries to offer support. Mr. Palmas informed that the upgrade projects of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base and the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base are continuing normally, as they are important infrastructure for Cyprus's role in the Eastern Mediterranean. Finally, the Minister of Defence called on citizens to remain calm and be cautious of misinformation.
