Ministry of Education: Ambitious Plans with Millions in Funding – Long List of School Construction and Maintenance

The Ministry of Education has prepared a long-term plan for school infrastructure, which includes an extensive list of school construction and maintenance projects. However, the implementation of these projects largely depends on the availability of financial resources, as the allocated budget is limited. The Director of the Technical Services of the Ministry of Education, Andreas Maragkos, informed the Education Committee of the Parliament that the planning and timelines of the projects are subject to the ceilings set by the Ministry of Finance for the budgets of the Ministries. The Committee found that, despite the increases shown by the numbers, there is no upward trend in the budget in recent years. After a significant cut in 2012 due to the economic crisis, the budget has not returned to the levels of 2011 (€55 million). Currently, approximately €35 million is available, while €40 million is expected for 2027. The long-term plan includes projects in Nicosia and Limassol, such as kindergarten extensions, construction of multipurpose halls, school upgrades, and maintenance work. The implementation of some projects is considered essential for safety reasons, even if they are not included in the current budget.
