Minister of Interior: The Government Stands by the Local Authorities – Reform for Flexibility, Transparency and Better Citizen Service

The Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, stated that the government stands by the Provincial Self-Governing Organizations (PSGOs) and is working to create a framework that will allow them to operate with flexibility, efficiency, and transparency. The statement was made during the presentation of the Ammoxostos PSGO's report. The Minister emphasized the importance of regularly informing citizens about the work of the Organizations to enhance transparency and accountability. The reform of Local Government is a significant turning point, aiming to address the long-standing weaknesses of the system. Despite the initial difficulties, the reform is progressing and strengthening the effectiveness of the Organizations, for the benefit of citizens and workers. The transfer of responsibilities to the PSGOs, such as water supply, sewage, licensing, and waste management, aims to restructure the operation of Local Government, reduce bureaucracy, and ensure uniform and transparent procedures. The government has promoted legislative regulations to improve the operational framework of the PSGOs, such as retaining licensing revenue within the Organizations and approving their budgets only by the Council of Ministers. In addition, the modernization and simplification of the licensing process are being promoted, aiming for faster and more efficient citizen service.
