Mercosur Deal Faces Criticism in Cyprus: Impact Study Questioned

The Cypriot government is facing strong criticism for approving the EU-Mercosur agreement without presenting an impact study on Cypriot agriculture. During a lengthy session of the House Agriculture Committee, the government side was unable to clearly answer whether the decision was based on any relevant study. Agricultural organizations express fears of unfair competition from cheap imports and protest the lack of consultation. They accused the government of 'selling out the producers' and requested the minutes of related meetings. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the Parliament cannot reject the agreement as a whole, only its political side, while the trade agreement will remain in effect.
