MEP Fidias Panayiotou Admits Mistake, Hints at Malice Over Offensive Remark

MEP Fidias Panayiotou admitted his mistake for the offensive characterization of athletes with intellectual disabilities as "pelloi" (a derogatory term) in a podcast. At the same time, he hinted at malice, arguing that the video was uploaded months ago and the reaction came now, amid the rising popularity of "Direct Democracy". Mr. Panayiotou expressed his regret for using the word and apologized to the athletes and anyone who may have been offended. He emphasized that the use of the word was unintentional and that he believes it is important to acknowledge one's mistakes. Furthermore, he stated that society often neglects and ignores people with disabilities, and that this may explain the lack of respect and dignity in the language used to describe them. He expressed his surprise as to why the reaction came now, and linked this fact to the poll that showed an increase in support for "Direct Democracy".
