“MEMORY – PRESENT – AFTER”: Cyprus Introduces Itself to Europe Through Art

Cyprus is preparing to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026 with a grand inaugural ceremony to be held at the Theatre of Cyprus. The event, titled “MEMORY – PRESENT – AFTER,” is not merely a formal ceremony but a cultural milestone that highlights Cyprus’s role in Europe. The ceremony will utilize various art forms, such as music, dance, theatre, poetry, and digital media, to showcase the history, present, and future of Cyprus as a bridge of cultures. The event is divided into three acts: “MEMORY,” focusing on the past and the island’s cultural identity; “PRESENT,” highlighting modern Cyprus as an active EU member but also acknowledging the wounds of occupation; and “AFTER,” envisioning a reunited, peaceful, and creative Cyprus. Each act is inspired by the works of Cypriot visual artists, while the title of each act will be announced by citizens from other EU member states who have chosen Cyprus as their home. The ceremony will be closed to the public but will be broadcast live on the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), allowing the wider audience to follow it. The production of the event is large-scale, with over 100 contributors involved in its creation. The Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU marks a significant opportunity for Cyprus to promote its priorities and contribute to shaping European policy. The choice of culture as the central theme of the inaugural ceremony underscores Cyprus’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage and creativity in Europe.
