Mediterranean: Fears of Hundreds Dead in Migrant Boat Shipwrecks

The fate of hundreds of people is unknown, and fears are growing that they have lost their lives attempting to cross the Mediterranean, following reports of several boat shipwrecks in the region over the past ten days amid extremely adverse weather conditions, as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Three deaths have been confirmed in Lampedusa, Italy, following a search and rescue operation for those on board a vessel that had departed from Sfax, Tunisia. Among them are twin one-year-old girls who died from hypothermia, their mother – a Guinean national – reported. One man also died from the same cause. Survivors have reported that another vessel disappeared around the same time, with fears of further casualties. Over the past ten days, amid Cyclone Harry, several migrant boats have vanished in the Mediterranean, and poor weather has hampered search and rescue operations. The IOM is attempting to verify the testimony of a rescued man near Malta, regarding a shipwreck with more than 50 people on board. In another incident, at least 51 people are believed to be dead after a shipwreck off Tobruk, Libya, according to IOM information. 'The smuggling of migrants on unseaworthy and overcrowded boats is a criminal act,' the IOM stresses. 'Organizing departures while a severe storm was hitting the area makes this behavior even more reprehensible, as people were knowingly sent to sea under conditions amounting to almost certain death.' Last year, at least 1,340 people died in the central Mediterranean, according to IOM data.
