Measures for Central Prisons to be Announced in March, Says Justice Minister

The Minister of Justice, Kostas Fytiris, announced that he will present measures to address the problems in the Central Prisons by the end of March. These include the installation of a mobile phone signal jamming system to combat organized crime within the prisons, as well as support measures for prison guards. Additionally, the Minister proposes the construction of a new, modern correctional facility outside urban areas, instead of expanding the existing building. The President of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, Irene Charalambidou, expressed satisfaction with the Minister's approach and called for a new meeting on March 23rd to be updated on the actions taken. The situation in the Central Prisons, including overcrowding and the coexistence of minor and serious offenders, is a significant challenge, while solutions such as electronic monitoring and the deportation of certain prisoners are also being considered.
