Mazotos Residents Protest Mobile Desalination Unit – Demonstration Planned for Saturday

Residents of Mazotos are strongly protesting the Ministry of Agriculture's decision to install a mobile desalination unit in the marine area. The Mazotos Community Council is organizing a demonstration on Saturday, January 24th at 10:00 a.m., demanding the revocation of the decision. They believe the decision is arbitrary and was made without an environmental study and consultation with the local community. In their letter, addressed to the President of the Republic and political parties, they argue that the principles of environmental governance are being violated, as a complete Environmental Impact Assessment has not been presented. They point out that the marine area of Mazotos is a sensitive ecosystem with significant biodiversity, fishing activity, and tourism development. The Mazotos community leader, Georgios Dimitriou Pafiti, stated that the Community Council had requested compensatory measures, but there was no positive response. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, acknowledged the concerns but emphasized the need for collective action and compliance with environmental legislation. The minister stated that environmental studies have been conducted and some of the community's requests have been met, while other proposals are difficult to implement. The proposal will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for a final decision.
