Mayors Reject New Landfill Tax in Cyprus

Cyprus municipalities are strongly opposing the government's intention to impose a landfill tax, arguing that the cost will inevitably be passed on to citizens. The Union of Municipalities criticizes the government for the lack of waste management infrastructure and argues that the Ministry has not effectively managed the issue of landfilling, burying 80% of waste when it should be 20%. Mayor of Amathous, Kyriakos Xydias, emphasized that the imposition of the tax will be a significant burden on households and warned of strong reactions. Additionally, he pointed out that the government's waste management plan will lead to increased costs. The municipalities demand that the state take responsibility and inform citizens about the increases that will occur. Finally, Mayor Vyras described the tax as "disastrous" for the municipalities.
