Marinella Passes Away: Greek Music Loses its High Priestess

The iconic singer Marinella, also known as Kyriaki Papadopoulou, has passed away, leaving a significant void in the Greek music scene. With a career spanning six decades, Marinella is considered one of the most successful and recognizable voices in Greece, touching the lives of many people with her music. Marinella was known for her energy and love of life, stating that age is just a number and that every moment should be lived to the fullest. She had expressed her dissatisfaction with the pessimism and envy she observed in society. Her career began as an actress in a troupe, where she was forced to replace the singer when she fell ill, revealing her talent for singing. She became known for her performances of songs such as "O Anthropos Mou" and "Malagenia". Marinella was closely linked to Stelios Kazantzidis, both professionally and personally. They shared a love for the sea and fishing, and began their collaboration with a duet. She suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in September 2024 while singing at the Herodeion and was hospitalized in a rehabilitation center.
