Main Suspect Arrested in Connection with Deadly Chile Wildfires

The Chilean prosecutor's office announced the arrest of the main suspect in connection with the deadly wildfires that hit southern Chile, causing more than 21 deaths. The suspect, a 39-year-old Chilean with a criminal record for assault and bodily harm, was arrested as authorities believe the fires were caused by arson. A total of four arrests have been made, although one suspect has been released. The fires have claimed the lives of 21 people and left approximately 20,000 people affected, while destroying entire villages and towns. The situation was exacerbated by high temperatures and strong winds. These fires recall the devastating fires of February 2024, which caused 138 deaths and were also attributed to arson.
