Low Risk of Chemical Contamination in Cyprus from Regional Conflicts

The possibility of Cyprus's atmosphere being affected by chemical pollutants due to conflicts in neighboring countries is extremely low, according to Chrysanthos Savvides, Head of the Air Quality Department of the Labour Inspection Department. Based on scientific data and analyses from previous incidents in Syria and Israel, no dangerous concentrations of chemical substances were detected. The Labour Inspection Department collects and analyzes dust samples for approximately 40 chemical substances, but the levels found are usually below the detection limits. Mr. Savvides explained that these chemical substances have a short lifespan in the atmosphere and cannot travel long distances, making an impact on Cyprus unlikely. Even in the case of Iran, which is further away, the probability is even lower. For an impact to occur, there would need to be a combination of conflicts near desert areas and dust episodes moving towards Cyprus. Currently, there is no dust in the atmosphere, and no impact has been recorded from recent episodes. Dust monitoring is carried out by the Department of Meteorology, while the Labour Inspection Department works closely with it. Additionally, the Department records measurements of atmospheric pollutants at breathing height, with stations placed at low altitudes to protect public health. Regarding a recent dust episode, Mr. Savvides stated that it did not affect Cyprus, while the rains helped to clean the atmosphere. Measurements did not record any concerning pollution.
