Loukaidis at PACE: Accountability and Humanitarian Protection Needed in Gaza and West Bank

MP Giorgos Loukaidis spoke at the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) regarding the need for accountability and humanitarian protection in Gaza and the West Bank following the ceasefire. He emphasized that the ceasefire has not brought substantial relief to the Palestinian people, who continue to face serious problems. Mr. Loukaidis referred to United Nations reports, noting that humanitarian access and reconstruction in Gaza remain obstructed, while the population remains displaced and without access to basic services. He expressed concern about the continued military attacks and assassination attempts even after the ceasefire, with civilians, children, and journalists as victims. In the West Bank, the MP criticized the intensification of military operations, mass arrests, house demolitions, and increased settler violence. He stressed that the continued expansion of settlements constitutes the consolidation of an apartheid regime. Mr. Loukaidis condemned the so-called "International Peace Council" of the United States, describing it as an affront to international law, as it was established bypassing the UN and without the participation of Palestinians. He emphasized that the genuine relief of the Palestinian people requires the immediate and unconditional lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid, the reconstruction of Gaza under the supervision of the UN, and the activation of accountability mechanisms.
