Livestock Crisis: Call for Extension of EU Measures to Occupied Territories

Agricultural organizations are emphasizing the need to apply the same measures to combat Foot-and-Mouth Disease that have been imposed in the free areas also to the occupied territories, as animal deaths continue. The president of the Sheep and Goat Producers Group, Sotiris Kades, stated that the non-application of measures in the occupied territories creates a dangerous environment for all livestock farmers. The Panagrotikos Syndesmos, with president Kyriakos Kailas, stressed that the implementation of strict measures is the only way to deal with the epidemic, proposing the temporary closure of checkpoints to control the movement of people. Livestock farmers are already implementing strict measures on their farms, but significant losses are expected. The government has committed to full compensation for livestock farmers, covering the value of the animals, losses in milk and feed, as well as income for a period of up to six months. However, restoring production will take time due to the need for pregnancy and development of new animals. A consultative committee has been established to determine the compensation prices and loss of income, while particular emphasis is placed on the need for full compensation for livestock farmers operating near the ceasefire line.
