Law Passed for Body Cameras on Police Uniforms and Vehicles in Cyprus

The Parliament has unanimously approved an amendment to the Police Law, allowing the use of body-worn cameras by the Cyprus Police, both on uniforms and in vehicles. Camera activation will only be permitted in specific circumstances, such as arrests, pursuits, searches, entry into premises for investigation, presence at crime scenes, crowd management, and high-risk operations (e.g., terrorism, kidnappings). The legislation stipulates informing citizens about camera activation, a visual indication of its operation (bright signal), and recording the time and location of use. The footage will be destroyed according to a specific policy to be determined by the Chief of Police. The aim of the legislation is transparency, the protection of citizens' rights, and the improvement of police effectiveness.
