Larnaca Port: Complaints over 'Zero Checks' on Feed Imports

Concerns are rising over the lack of checks and disinfection procedures for imported animal feed at the Port of Larnaca, particularly given the increased risk of foot-and-mouth disease. Farmers are reporting that feed, such as corn and soybeans, is being transported directly to farms without the required inspection and disinfection, potentially endangering the livestock population. The Cyprus Ports Authority states that it does not have the authority for these checks, which fall under the responsibility of other government agencies. However, questions remain regarding which agency is responsible, whether the required checks are being carried out, if a traceability system exists, and whether additional preventative measures have been taken due to the epidemiological situation in the region. Farmers fear serious economic consequences should foot-and-mouth disease appear in Cyprus.
