Larnaca Coastal Protection Project Halted Due to Environmental Concerns

The construction of breakwaters and vertical projections along the Larnaca coastline, from Kiti Akrotiri to the airport area, has been halted due to a negative opinion from the Environmental Authority. The authority deemed that the project would cause significant and irreversible impacts on marine ecosystems. According to the report, the construction would destroy substantial areas of Posidonia oceanica meadows, sandy beaches, and reefs, as well as vital feeding grounds for the protected turtles Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas. The area hosts 10% of Cyprus's sand dune habitats. The Environmental Authority proposes the submission of alternative solutions based on the principles of Nature-based Solutions. It is noted that the intense erosion is partly due to the existing breakwater in Perivolia and that the construction of new projects could worsen the problem. The Public Works Department had submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment Strategic Study to protect 6.5 kilometers of coastline, but the Environmental Authority ruled that the impacts were too great.
