Land Still Thirsty: Average Rainfall at 31% of Normal for January 1-12

The amount of rainfall in the free areas of Cyprus, from January 1st to 12th, amounted to 31% of the normal for the period. However, the last three days saw significant improvement with 22.4 millimeters of rain, bringing the average to 31.6 millimeters. Nevertheless, the total amount remains much lower than the normal rainfall for January, which is 102.4 millimeters. The areas with the highest rainfall in the last three days were Platanias (51.3 mm), Prodromos (49.5 mm), and Pano Panagia (48.1 mm). Overall, Platanias has collected the most rainfall since the beginning of the month (73.8 mm), followed by Stavros tis Psokas and Pano Panagia (67.6 mm). These figures come from a preliminary analysis by the Department of Meteorology and demonstrate the ongoing drought in Cyprus. The lack of rainfall negatively affects agriculture, water reserves, and the overall environment. The situation is being closely monitored by the competent authorities, who are considering measures to address the effects of the drought. The need for water conservation and the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices is more urgent than ever.
