Kyriakos Mitsotakis: George Vassiliou Set Cyprus on the Path to Europe

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences on the death of former Cypriot President George Vassiliou, emphasizing his contribution to Cyprus's European path. Mitsotakis described Vassiliou as a “non-political” politician who served his duty with dedication, guided by the national issue, democracy, and progress. Specifically, Mitsotakis stated that Vassiliou set Cyprus on the path to Europe, leading to the country's successful accession to the European Union. He also stressed that Vassiliou was a patriot who sought a realistic and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem. Mitsotakis also referred to the bold structural reforms that Vassiliou promoted in the state, as well as the establishment of the University of Cyprus. He expressed his appreciation for Vassiliou's friendship with Konstantinos Mitsotakis, with whom they shared a belief in reforms that lead to development and prosperity. Finally, Mitsotakis mentioned that he had the honor of presenting the second volume of Vassiliou's autobiography in 2017, emphasizing that Vassiliou was a unique figure in public life, as his references were never partisan.
