Kaspersky: Phishing Threats Evolved in 2025

Kaspersky has released its annual report on the evolution of online fraud and phishing threats for 2025, highlighting a shift from mass campaigns to more targeted attacks. Phishers are now seeking to steal not only credentials but also biometric data, such as facial photos, to bypass identity verification systems. This evolution underscores the increasing sophistication of online fraud and the need for enhanced security measures. The report also highlights the increased localization of phishing attacks, with attackers exploiting local markets and popular entertainment platforms, public services, artificial intelligence tools, and messaging applications to deceive users. This localized approach makes attacks more convincing and increases the likelihood of success. A particularly concerning trend is the rise in phishing attacks posing as "Know Your Customer" (KYC) checks, where phishers request scanned passports and facial photos with the aim of identity theft and access to accounts requiring biometric verification. This underscores the need for caution when providing personal information online. Furthermore, WhatsApp and Telegram accounts have become significant targets for phishing and fraud, with cybercriminals using contests and free subscription offers to gain access to user credentials. Fraudsters have expanded their activities into more languages, increasing the reach of their attacks. Finally, there has been an increase in concert ticket scams, where users are tricked into paying for tickets they never receive.
