Karpasia: Land of Beauty, Sacrifice and Struggle for Freedom

Karpasia, in the province of Famagusta, has historically been an area of rare natural beauty and deep human dignity. Its inhabitants were distinguished by their pride in their Greek roots, their hard work, honesty and hospitality. Despite conquests, they showed perseverance and fought for their freedom, maintaining the Greek and Christian presence in the region. The history of Karpasia is full of heroic struggles for freedom, from the liberation struggle against British colonialism to the Turkish invasion of 1974. The inhabitants demonstrated courage, patriotism and self-sacrifice, with many sacrificing their lives for the freedom of their homeland. The Turkish invasion ended the natural continuity of life in Karpasia. Thousands were evicted from their homes, while those who remained suffered oppression, humiliation and crimes. The area was demographically altered with the settlement of settlers, while the trapped residents were gradually forced into eviction. At the same time, the Greek language and culture are under pressure, with churches and monasteries being desecrated and converted into other spaces. The construction of a mosque next to the Monastery of the Apostle Andrew and the looting of relics are characteristic examples. In addition, illegal land developments and the sale of Greek Cypriot properties are observed, with unlawful transmission of owners' personal data.
