JRC: Proactive Use of Antivirals May Reduce Flu Spread

A new study by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) suggests that the proactive use of antiviral drugs can be an effective alternative or complementary strategy to limit the spread of influenza, alongside vaccination. The study confirms the importance of high vaccination coverage, but points out that using antiviral drugs before the onset of illness is more effective than therapeutic administration, unless it is a resistant strain of the virus. Furthermore, the combination of antiviral drugs in treatment reduces the emergence of resistant strains. Given the increasing threat of avian influenza, the study emphasizes the need for a thorough examination of the benefits and limitations of antiviral drugs, as well as the development of optimal intervention strategies.
