Italy, Spain, and Netherlands Send Ships to Protect Cyprus

Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands have responded to escalating tensions in Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean by deciding to send warships to protect the island. Spain announced the deployment of the Cristóbal frigate, which will accompany the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and Greek ships, following the recent Iranian drone attack on a British base in Cyprus. The frigate will be involved in protection missions, anti-aircraft defense, and the possible evacuation of non-military personnel. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that Italy, along with France, Spain, and the Netherlands, will send security assistance to Cyprus as part of a continuous coordination between EU defense ministries. This decision is based on Article 7 of the EU Treaty, which provides for support to a member state under attack. The initiative to send aid to Cyprus was launched by French President Emmanuel Macron, who contacted Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The three leaders agreed to coordinate their efforts to send military assets to Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. The goal of the missions is to protect Cyprus and ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, during a period of increased geopolitical instability in the region. This move demonstrates European solidarity and determination to address the challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean.
