Italy Hit by Record Number of Extreme Weather Events in 2025

Italy experienced an increase in extreme weather events in 2025, recording 376 such occurrences, a 5.9% increase compared to 2024. This year was the second most affected by extreme events in the last decade, following 2023. Floods, wind damage, and river overflows were the most frequent events, with a significant rise in incidents linked to record temperatures and landslides. Lombardy, Sicily, and Tuscany were the most affected regions, while southern Italy faced severe drought. Economic damages are estimated at €11.9 billion for 2025 and are expected to rise to €34.2 billion by 2029. Legambiente is calling for the immediate implementation of the National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change and increased funding for preventative measures.
