Iranian President Calls for Restraint Towards Protesters

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered security forces to exercise restraint during ongoing protests across the country sparked by the economic crisis. The order emphasizes distinguishing between peaceful protesters and those labeled as "rioters" who are armed. The protests, now in their 11th day, were triggered by rising prices and the collapse of the currency. According to the Iran Human Rights (IHR) NGO, security forces have killed at least 27 protesters, including five minors. Iranian state media report a lower death toll, including members of the security forces. Meanwhile, Iranian General Amir Hatami warned that Tehran will not tolerate external threats, responding to statements of support for the protesters from leaders such as Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr. Hatami stressed that Iran's response would be more forceful in the event of a new challenge. The protests began on December 28th with a strike by merchants in Tehran and have spread throughout the country, with clashes erupting in the Grand Bazaar of the capital. The situation remains tense as the government attempts to manage the crisis and prevent an escalation of violence.
