Iran War Could Push 45 Million Into Hunger in Three Months

A new analysis by the World Food Programme (WFP) warns that the war in Iran could push an additional 45 million people into hunger within three months, driving global food insecurity to a historic high. If the conflict continues until mid-2026 and oil prices remain above $100 per barrel, the number of people without adequate access to food will reach 363 million. The disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil passes, has exacerbated the situation, impacting food and fertilizer prices. The regions most affected will be Asia, East and Southern Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Africa. The WFP emphasizes the need for adequate funding for humanitarian assistance to prevent a catastrophe.
