Iran-US: Aircraft Carrier in the Persian Gulf and Continued Suppression

Amid escalating tensions between Iran and the US, the American aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln has arrived in the Persian Gulf, while Donald Trump leaves open the possibility of military intervention, but also states that Tehran is “ready for dialogue”. The situation remains unclear regarding US intentions. In Iran, arrests continue throughout the country, despite the apparent decline in protests that erupted earlier this month. According to the non-governmental organization HRANA, at least 41,880 people have been arrested. HRANA has recorded the deaths of 6,126 people, including 5,777 protesters, and is investigating another 17,000 possible deaths. The organization accuses Iranian authorities of arresting injured people from hospitals, which is denied by the Iranian Ministry of Health. Trump, although initially threatening military intervention, now appears to be considering other options, such as bombing raids or targeted strikes against regime officials, with the ultimate goal of overthrowing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran, for its part, warns that the aircraft carrier will become a target if it enters Iranian territorial waters.
