Iran Protest Death Toll Significantly Higher Than Reported

New estimates from Iranian doctors suggest the death toll from the suppression of anti-government protests in Iran is far higher than previously reported. According to data collected by a network of Iranian physicians, over 16,500 people have lost their lives, and at least 330,000 have been injured. The majority of the victims were under 30 years old, including children and pregnant women. Doctors report the extensive use of military equipment by security forces and instances of medical care being denied to the injured. The Iranian government has reported much lower death tolls, with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei citing “several thousand” and one official stating at least 5,000.
