Iran: Over 5,000 Dead in Protests According to NGOs

According to the non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the number of people who have lost their lives during the protests in Iran exceeds 5,000. HRANA reports that 4,714 of the dead are protesters, 42 are minors, 207 are members of the security forces, and 39 are bystanders, while it is investigating another 9,787 potential deaths. Verifying the deaths is difficult due to the internet blackout imposed by Iranian authorities since January 8th. HRANA also reports that 26,852 people have been arrested. Another NGO, Iran Human Rights (IHR), has confirmed the deaths of 3,428 protesters, but expresses fears that the actual number could reach 25,000. Iranian authorities announced a first official death toll of 3,117, with 2,427 being members of the security forces or bystanders, and not protesters, a figure disputed by human rights organizations.
