Iran: Arrested Protesters to be Tried 'Soon' - No Lenience'

The head of Iran's judicial authorities, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, announced that trials of protesters arrested during recent demonstrations will begin soon, with no leniency for the guilty. Ejei stressed that justice will show “the greatest severity” in the investigations and will severely punish those who committed crimes such as murder, arson and destruction. Human rights organizations estimate that thousands of people were arrested during the protests, while hundreds were killed. Security forces are accused of using live ammunition against protesters, which the head of the police special forces denies, claiming that only non-lethal means, such as water cannons and paintball launchers, were used. The internet remains down in Iran, making it difficult to verify information.
