Ioannidis: Full Implementation of the New Pact on Migration is a Central Pillar

The Deputy Minister to the President, Nikola Ioannidis, presented the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency in the Council of the European Union regarding migration to the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament. The central focus will be the full implementation of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, expected to come into force by 2026. The Presidency will support the implementation of the Pact at all levels and facilitate dialogue and cooperation. Mr. Ioannidis emphasized that Cyprus is taking over the Presidency during a period of geopolitical uncertainty, with conflicts and instability affecting the security of the EU. He highlighted the need for unity and collective action in addressing the challenges of migration, as no country can face them alone. Particular emphasis was placed on the issue of returns, described as crucial for an effective migration management system. The Presidency will work to complete the relevant legislative dossier, while it was stressed that non-cooperation will no longer be a means of avoiding returns. Furthermore, Mr. Ioannidis referred to the importance of the external dimension of migration policy and partnerships with third countries, promoting comprehensive collaborations based on the principle of “more for more”, aiming to strengthen development and local capacities for dignified and sustainable outcomes.
