Investigation Focuses on GBL in Death of 78-Year-Old

Investigations into the death of a 78-year-old man and the illness of four others, after consuming water from a cooler containing GBL (gamma-Butyrolactone), are focusing on scientific evidence. The substance GBL was found in a cleaning liquid that is legally available, but is also used as a substitute for drugs, converting into GHB, a powerful depressant. The case is linked to the 78-year-old's 44-year-old son, who was arrested for drug offenses and is currently in custody. According to testimonies, the GBL liquid was poured into the cooler on Saturday, January 3rd. The 73-year-old homeowner consumed lemonade with the contaminated water and fainted, while the 78-year-old was found dead that same evening. The following day, relatives and friends consumed coffee and water from the cooler, resulting in illness and hospitalization. An antidote was administered to two of them. Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology tests and other scientific analyses. The case appears to be due to error rather than malice, however, testimonies from the 73-year-old and the 44-year-old are expected to clarify the circumstances.
