International community wary of Trump's 'Peace Council', fears undermining UN work

Published January 18, 2026, 17:30

US President Donald Trump has promoted an initiative to create a 'Peace Council' aimed at resolving global conflicts, which has drawn cautious reactions from the international community. Hungary is the only country to have immediately accepted the invitation, while other governments are expressing concerns about potentially undermining the work of the United Nations. The council will be chaired by Trump and will begin by managing the war in Gaza, with the aim of expanding to other conflicts. Membership in the council will require a contribution of $1 billion for permanent participation. Some diplomats believe this initiative is an attempt to bypass the United Nations and challenge the fundamental principles of its Charter.
