Interior Ministry Responds to Shelter Concerns – “Gaps and Weaknesses Identified”

The Ministry of Interior acknowledges the existence of gaps and weaknesses in the program for identifying and creating shelters, confirming the findings of the Auditor General's Report. However, it emphasizes that targeted actions to improve the situation have been underway for the past three years. Specifically, a new approach has been adopted to create shelters in public spaces with large capacity, such as underground parking lots and supermarkets, instead of underground spaces in private homes. Furthermore, the lack of public information about shelters is recognized, and the need to improve the SafeCY application, which has already been significantly corrected in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Innovation and the “KOIOS” Center, is acknowledged. The Ministry of Interior notes that the findings of the Auditor General's Report confirm the need for reorganization and modernization of the shelter program, an effort that began in 2023. The goal is to gradually improve the civil protection framework and strengthen the level of response to emergencies. The recognition of weaknesses and the action taken by the Ministry of Interior signal an effort to improve the country's preparedness in the event of natural disasters or other crises.
