Interim Venezuelan President Creates Release Commission

The interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced on Sunday the establishment of a commission tasked with securing the release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were captured by the US military and taken to the United States. The commission will consist of high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Information, the President of the Parliament, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Maduro, who is accused by Washington of “drug trafficking” and “terrorism,” has been detained in a New York detention center and is expected to appear before a New York court later in the day. Ms. Rodríguez stressed the need for a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States, based on respect for sovereignty and non-interference. The new President invited the US government to cooperate for common development, while convening her first cabinet meeting after the arrest of Mr. Maduro. The council included key ministers who had also served in the previous government. The creation of the commission and Ms. Rodríguez's statements are an attempt to address the crisis caused by Mr. Maduro's arrest and ensure stability in Venezuela.
