In Which Organ in Our Body Does the Secret of Human Intelligence Lie?

A new study from Northwestern University suggests that the gut may hold the key to human intelligence. The research shows that changes in the composition of gut microbes can affect brain function. Scientists observed that primates with larger brains have different gut microbiomes than those with smaller brains. When these microbes were transferred to mice, increased energy production in the brain and improved synaptic plasticity, which is important for learning and adaptation, were observed. The study showed that mice that received microbes from primates with large brains exhibited increased expression of genes associated with energy production and synaptic plasticity. This suggests that the gut microbiome can directly affect brain function. In addition, researchers identified patterns of gene expression associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD, schizophrenia, and autism, in the mice colonized with microbes from primates with smaller brains. This suggests that the gut microbiome may play a role in the development of these disorders.
