Immediate Response from Interior Ministry After Akrotiri Alert: 2,500 Shelters Available

Following an alert in the Akrotiri area, the Minister of Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, and the Commander of the Civil Defence Force, Maria Papa, made statements regarding the measures taken. The Civil Defence Force activated its procedures immediately after being informed by the National Guard and the British Bases, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Commander Papa stated that local authorities and citizens were immediately informed, giving them the option to proactively move to the Limassol Early Warning Center (K.E.N.) if they wished. The K.E.N.'s mechanisms were also activated to safely receive and accommodate citizens. Teams from the Force remained in the Akrotiri area, ready to offer assistance to those in need, while contact was made with the Red Cross for the possible transport of people with disabilities or vulnerable groups. Continuous updates confirmed that the airspace was clear. According to the Commander, there are approximately 2,500 shelters available across Cyprus, covering around 40-45% of the population. Citizens can find information about the nearest shelter through the “SafeCY” application.
