ICE Agents to Deploy to Italy for Winter Olympics

Agents from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are expected to be deployed to Italy ahead of the Winter Olympics (February 6-22), to support security efforts and counter transnational criminal organizations. The announcement comes after the shooting death of an American citizen by ICE agents in Minneapolis, the second such death in a month. ICE will collaborate with the US Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service and Italian authorities to assess and mitigate risks. The Minneapolis incident involved the shooting and killing of Alex Pretty, a veteran nurse, during protests. The circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation by the police, and the arrest of Jacqueline Hernandez, the mother of the infant, has raised questions about ICE procedures.
