Hurry Up, Lords, Lest We Lose 2026 Too

Cyprus, taking over the presidency of the European Union, has the opportunity to play a significant role, given its strong connection to European developments and the need to address the Turkish threat. However, despite the preparation and expectation of upgrading, Cyprus faces significant internal problems that remain unresolved. The Cypriot building, in contrast to the effort to revitalize the European one, appears stuck, with key issues such as energy (natural gas, elimination of mazut) remaining unresolved for two decades, burdening citizens with high electricity costs. Despite the initial pride and credibility demonstrated by Cyprus, urgent issues remain pending and cannot be neglected. The possibility of new problems in electricity generation during the summer, the uncertainty surrounding Prometheus and the Vasilikos terminal, are indicative examples of the need for immediate action. The government is called upon not to leave behind the daily needs of citizens, while simultaneously seeking to contribute to the European agenda. On the domestic front, the situation remains fluid. The resolution of the issue of educators with the evaluation appears to be temporary, as trade unions reserve the right to make decisions after the opening of schools. New reactions are emerging in the Police, where officers are protesting the change in their working hours, despite the leadership's intention to improve working conditions. The disagreement concerns the loss of days off and the increase in pressure on the service. Furthermore, the economic situation remains worrying, with the minimum wage being inadequate, the ATA covering few, rents rising and foreclosures continuing to cause social tragedies. Inflation also remains a constant problem for citizens. According to Eurostat, Cyprus is among the last places in the EU in terms of economic prosperity, highlighting the need for substantial reforms and improvement of the quality of life.
