Human Rights Committee: Proposals for Amendment of Law on Violence Against Women from Legislative Commissioner

Legislative Commissioner Sofia Kleopa Hadjikyriakou presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights proposals for amending the law on violence against women, aiming to strengthen victim protection and comply with the recommendations of the Council of Europe's GREVIO Committee. The Commissioner emphasized that access to support measures will be independent of the victim's willingness to file a complaint. Committee Chairman George Koukoumas recalled that Cyprus ratified the Istanbul Convention in 2017 and passed related legislation in 2021, but its implementation is fragmented and public awareness is inadequate. He stressed the need to map the problem and implement protocols by state agencies. MPs Irene Charalambidou and Alexandra Attalidou expressed concerns about delays in implementing the Convention and the lack of substantial protection for victims. Ms. Attalidou proposed the creation of a mechanism to monitor every case of violence that receives publicity. The Legislative Commissioner announced that the drafting of proposals for amending the law has been completed, with the aim of strengthening the protection of women and more effectively addressing violence against women and domestic violence.
