Hubble Telescope Accidentally Captured Comet Breakup (VIDEO)

The Hubble Space Telescope accidentally captured the breakup of comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS), a very rare event, as it was not the original target of observation. The comet disintegrated into at least four pieces near its perihelion (very close to the Sun) due to intense heat and stress. The recording was made almost in real time, offering scientists a unique opportunity to study 'fresh' material from the comet's interior. The observation is important as it allows the analysis of primordial materials that have not been altered by the Sun. At the same time, a mystery arose regarding a bright explosion observed with a delay, possibly due to dust and ice processes on the comet's surface. The comet K1 is chemically unusual, with low carbon content, and has now disintegrated into fragments, heading out of the solar system. This observation is a significant contribution to understanding the composition and behavior of comets.
