How Much Did Blue Dye Cost in Pompeii?

New research calculates the cost of the Egyptian blue dye that covered the walls of the impressive Blue Room in Pompeii. The study, published in npj Heritage Science, reveals that Egyptian blue was one of the most expensive colors in antiquity and its use in the small sacred space indicates the wealth of the house's owners. Researchers estimate that 2.7 to 4.9 kilograms of pigment were needed to cover the space, costing 93 to 168 denarii, not including labor costs. The research highlights that the choice of the expensive color was not just a matter of aesthetics, but also a display of status. In addition, the study presents new techniques for non-invasive analysis of ancient pigments, using luminescence and spectroscopy.
