How Artificial Intelligence is Used in Warfare – What the Future Holds

The escalation of conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has brought the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in warfare back into focus. A disagreement between the US government and an AI technology provider, coupled with international discussions on lethal autonomous weapon systems, highlights concerns about the military applications of AI. Researchers point out that technological advancements in AI are outpacing international regulatory efforts, increasing the likelihood of uncontrolled proliferation of AI use in war. The US military already extensively uses AI systems for administrative support, information processing, and decision support in the battlefield. The Maven Smart System, one such system, is used for image processing, target prioritization, and has been used in previous conflicts, including attacks against Iran. There is debate about whether AI can improve targeting accuracy and reduce civilian casualties. However, conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, where AI is used for target recognition and drone navigation, have shown high numbers of civilian deaths, questioning the effectiveness of AI in preventing such tragedies. The development of lethal autonomous weapons without human oversight remains a highly controversial issue, with concerns about the ethical and legal implications. The lack of international regulation and the rapid advancement of technology create a dangerous environment where the use of AI in warfare could escalate without adequate safeguards.
