Holy Synod to Impose Suspension on Former Bishop Tychikos – Court Appeal Threat Falls Flat

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus is expected to suspend former Bishop of Paphos, Tychikos, despite his attempts to prevent a new penalty, threatening to appeal to the courts. The Synod appears to be avoiding excommunication, but the suspension will place him outside the Hierarchy and on the sidelines for a long period. Tychikos had submitted a 'confession of faith' which, however, does not meet the requirements of the Holy Synod. This decision comes after a similar case involving the former Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Avvakum, Nektarios, who had tried to block the proceedings through the courts, but failed. The Supreme Court has already ruled that the Church of Cyprus has the exclusive right to regulate its internal affairs.
