Holy Synod: Appeal by Former Bishop of Paphos to Political Courts is Unacceptable

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus thoroughly examined the case of the former Bishop of Paphos, Tychikos, following the unanimous ratification of its decision by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on May 23, 2025. The Synod deemed his appeal to political courts unacceptable from an ecclesiastical standpoint and expressed concern over the unrest he causes among the faithful with his statements and the support of a small group of individuals. Furthermore, the Synod accused Tychikos of attempting to create divisions among its members. As a result, the Holy Synod decided to impose the penalty of indefinite suspension on Tychikos until he submits a specific Profession of Faith, withdraws his appeal to political courts, condemns his excommunication from the Church, accepts new duties at the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus assigned by the Archbishop of Cyprus, or ceases to cause disturbance. This decision was made despite Tychikos's refusal to comply with the terms set by the Synod. Outside the Archbishopric, a small number of Tychikos's supporters gathered, expressing their opposition to the Holy Synod's decision and supporting the innocence and worth of the former bishop. They held banners with messages of support and criticism towards the Church of Cyprus. The case of Tychikos has provoked strong reactions and discussions within the Cypriot Church and society, as it touches upon issues of ecclesiastical autonomy, justice, and transparency. The Holy Synod appears determined to enforce order and protect the unity of the Church, while Tychikos remains steadfast in his views and seeks other avenues to assert his rights.
