Historic EU Decision on Proxy Voting for MEPs During Pregnancy and Maternity

The European Union has approved a historic amendment to the European electoral law allowing proxy voting for MEPs during pregnancy and maternity. The new regulation allows MEPs in advanced stages of pregnancy or who have recently given birth to temporarily delegate their vote to a colleague. The delegation can be valid for up to three months before childbirth and up to six months after. The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, welcomed the agreement as a step towards strengthening democratic participation and equality. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, described the decision as an important step forward for female MEPs. The measure will be sent to the European Parliament for approval and then to the Council for final adoption.
